Session 3 Upper Elementary

UPPER ELEMENTARY (Ages 9-11 and above)

MYTHOLOGY (Ages 9-11)
Meets: 9-10 IN THE KITCHEN/CAFE
LEAD VOLUNTEER: Bethany Wenger
Prerequisite: Upper Elementary reading and writing skills
Supplies: Pen, Pencil, Colored Pencils, and Composition Book
ASSISTANT: NEEDED

Learners will investigate the purposes, elements, and characteristics of mythology. This session will focus on Norse Mythology.

ARTS AND CRAFTS: STRING ART PROJECTS (Ages 10+)
Meets 12:30-1:30 IN THE UPSTAIRS ART ROOM
LEAD VOLUNTEER: Becky McElhaney
Artists should have some basic knowledge of artistic supplies and applications
Please bring a hammer with your name on it. If the artist wishes to bring their own thread (certain colors) they may choose to.
Class Limit 10
ASSISTANTS: Shayla Mack and 1 needed
FEE: $10
Artists will complete three string art projects. All supplies are provided. If they finish early, they may pay an additional $3.50 for additional project supplies.

PUBLIC SPEAKING (Ages 9-11)
Meets:11-12 IN THE SMALLER UPSTAIRS ROOM

This class provides learners with opportunities to articulate themselves in front of an audience, to listen and offer feedback to others, and to prepare speeches on a variety of topics (a “how to” speech; debate both sides of a topic). Please note: homework will be assigned.

SCIENCE: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION (Ages 10+)
Meets: 9-10 IN THE ART ROOM
LEAD VOLUNTEER: Katie Raburn
No prerequisite required
Supplies: Please bring your magnifying glass to class.

Learners will focus on crime scene investigations focusing on prints of all types and some DNA study.

INTRODUCTION TO PLANTS AND GARDENING (Ages 9-11)
Meets: 10:30-11 IN THE KITCHEN/CAFE

Learners will be introduced to the basics of soil, plant life and gardening.
PAPER ROLLER COASTERS (Ages 10+)
Meets: 10-11 IN THE ART ROOM
LEAD VOLUNTEERS: Shayla Mack and Becky McElhaney
Prerequisite skills: Must be able to cut carefully without major frustration.
Supplies Required: Good pair of scissors

Have you ever wanted to design your own roller coaster? Designers in this class will create their own roller coasters while learning about attention to detail including careful planning and execution of ideas.

BASICS OF WRITING (Ages 8-10)
Meets: 10-11 TINY UPSTAIRS
LEAD VOLUNTEER: Candace Dashiell
Prerequisite skills: Proficient reader and basic spelling skills
Supplies Required: paper, pen and pencil
Class Limit 6
ASSISTANT: 1 NEEDED

Writers will improve their basic skills. Writers will learn about key word outlines, how to improve writing with adjectives and adverbs, and how to limit “banned” words. Writers will have homework and will present their writing in class.

APOCOLYPSE SURVIVAL SKILLS (Ages 9+)
Meets: 1:30-2:30 IN THE ART ROOM
LEAD VOLUNTEER: Brianna Smith
Prerequisite skills: Survivalists must be trustworthy nine year olds or older. They must follow directions exactly and keep safety in mind at all times.
No Class Limit, but ONE ASSISSTANT is needed for each four students enrolled
FEE: $8
Survivalists will learn how to make useful weapons while mastering survival skills for use in emergencies.

INTRODUCTION TO CROCHET (AGES 9+)
Meets:12:30-1:30 TINY UPSTAIRS ROOM
LEAD VOLUNTEER: Bethany Wenger
No prerequisite skills required
FEE and Supplies: If you supply your own crochet hook and yarn the class is FREE. If you would like the teacher to supply these items it will be $8.00.
No class limit; however, one ASSISTANT (who knows how to crochet) will be needed for every four students.
Learners will gain a basic understanding of crochet. Basic stitches, pattern reading and yarn and hooks will be covered.

LEGO LAB (9-11)
Meets: 11-12 IN THE LARGE COMMON ROOM (STAGE SIDE)
LEAD VOLUNTEERS: Darcy Harris and Joy Kavanaugh
No prerequisite skills required.
Supplies: Students may bring their own Lego sets; however, it is the student’s responsibility to leave with his/her own Legos.

Lego enthusiasts will have a dedicated meeting time for experimenting with Legos and Lego challenges.
